Burundi is a small land locked country in Central Africa. It has been a poor country with not much industry and very little to export. Growing a better quality of coffee may change the cysle of poverty.
Aribica coffee trees were introduced by the Belgians in the 1930's - but the grade of coffee was just very average. then a civil war interrupted progress. With the war over and with professional help from growing to marketing there is hope for a change.
Burundi is now growing premium coffee. The World Bank is funding this effort and Seleus Nezerwe is the coordinator of the project. In the future the coffee will be more marketable and the coffee growers will learn how to be competitive. Buyers from the U.S. are visiting to sample this coffee.
