Residents find gardening in Burundi a necessity. The dry and the rainy season can pose a problem since a family has to eat year around. During the dry season the garden was planted down toward the valley where there
was water. The hill was barren and rocky with no water. A small plot of garden was dug. Then one day a trail of people came carrying baskets of manure for this plot - they brought manure in exchange for salt.
A long term solution had to be found so then African workmen cleared a space digging out the rocks. Then they dug up clumps of grass and placed them on the hoed ground. The grass rotted and the soil filtered into the ground.
This process was repeated each year and finally a large thriving garden was created along with a thriving family of five boys.
