As I was perusing general information before settling down to write I came across an article
by David Frum, a writer for CNN.com. He discussed the new health care plan which is
supposed to help cut health care costs and extend benefits to millions.
The question he posed is what will we really get out of the expense. He was neither for or against, and my purpose is not to discuss this bill either. The point David Frum tried to
emphasize is that Americans already spend 60% more on health care for each individual in
this country. Yet, Americans are more likely to get sick. Obesity is an epidemic.
If you eat too much, drink too much, smoke, take drugs, fail to wear seat belts and ignore
gun safety then things are not really going to improve with the actual state of our health.
My husband recently had a Nuclear Stress Test to check on a stent placed in an artery
of his heart - great to say that ten years later everything is fine. But, in the office of the
cardiologist he was surrounded by very over weight people, some even munching on bags
of potato chips.
My writing has often addressed this situation at least as far as diet goes. Cravings can
be reduced if healthy food is ingested. We need to eat far less food and get more exercise.
So much is really up to the individual - think about what you put in your mouth the next
time you pick up a fork. Is a large platter of steak with french fries necessary? Never.
