1. The heart healthy recipes that I hope many readers are trying, are all low in saturated fat. Reduce red meat and dairy products-to lean meat and skim or low fat dairy. Whole soy protein can also be substituted for animal protein. I will include some more vegetarian recipes again. I emphasize modification in diet that still allows you to enjoy meals.
2. Stay away from items that list "partially hydrogenated oil" on the label. This is found primarily in snack foods. Try baked or air popped versions instead.
3. Use fresh garlic in meals. Garlic has been known to help lower cholesterol.
4. Drink green tea daily. The antioxidants in green tea lower cholesterol and prevent the cholesterol in your blood from oxididizing.
5. Eat plenty of soluble fiber which has powerful cholesterol-lowering effects. Great source are beans, lentils, apples, citrus, fruits, oats, barley, peas, carrots and ground flaxseed. Think salad.
from drweil.com, whose website is always informative
After studying, reading, researching foods and products that heal, I developed new habits. My yoga instructor always says that people can dig their graves with a knife and fork. Would you run your cars or machinery on dirty fuels? Why then would you put junk foods in your body? Whole grains, seeds, nuts, vegetables, fruits, beans, legumes, lean meats, fish come in so many varieties and can be prepared in delicious recipes; unhealthy choices can truly be eliminated.
